The Shapes of Space

This exhibition, at the Guggenheim until September 5, explores the subject of space as it relates to art. The artworks include video, photography, sculpture, language, and painting while all pieces in the show take up, contain, describe or create space.

You needn't pay the price of admission for my favorite work. On the ground floor of the rotunda is the sculpture/installation that inspired the title of the exhibition, Alyson Shotz's "The Shape of Space"(2004). Ms. Shotz and her assistants carefully cut out 18,000 plastic Fresnel lens sheets and stapled them together to create this breathtaking (magical!) work.

Whilst researching the principles of String Theory, the artist became engaged by the theory's 11 dimensions. With this sculpture, Ms. Shotz brings us into her interpretation of a world where we can experience these 8 additional dimensions that we, in our everyday lives, are not privy to.
