I first saw one of
Richard Serra's "Torqued Ellipses" while on a visit to the
Dia Center in Beacon. Housed in the old cracker factory in a great hall all their own, they stand without pretense while you are left to curiously explore their dark, curving spaces.
Now, at
MOMA, you can see more of these large-scale sculptures both inside the galleries and outside in the sculpture garden. The retrospective includes works that span his 40 year career and helps you understand how, with his use of industrial materials like
rubber, steel and
lead he has arrived here; creating massive curved steel walls that are powerful yet subdued.
